Nephrotic syndrome occurs when the glomeruli are damaged and they become more permeable, leading to a collection of symptoms including heavy proteinuria (including albumin) of more than 3.5 grams per day and hypoalbuminemia. In contrast, Nephritic syndrome is typically caused by inflammation that damages the glomerular basement membrane, leading to hematuria and red blood cell casts in the urine which gives the urine a characteristic cola color.
