What is psychosis?
Psychosis is a sign itself instead of a disease. It is the condition in which a patient may feel, see or hear things without them actually being there. It is seen in primarily in conditions like: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and as a secondary sign of any medical disorder like: hepatic encephalopathy or drug induced. Psychosis starts gradually. It is seen in small changes like drop in grades, difficulty concentrating, suspicious behavior all the time, carelessness for hygiene, unbalanced emotions. Psychosis itself is observed by all in the surroundings. It presents as: hallucination (auditory, tactile or visual), delusions (abnormal believes). Causes of the condition: genetic predisposition, drugs (alcohol, amphetamines), trauma (loss of loved one), prolonged illness. Diagnosis is done after ruling out any medical condition. The psychiatrist may need to involve the family. Management is performed according to the cause. If medical psychiatrist will refer the patient back to a physician. If psychological they may go for sessions and oral medications (antipsychotics) in combination.
