What is multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS) in children (MIS-C) and how is it diagnosed?
Multisystem Inflammatory System in Children (MIS-C) is a rare disorder associated with COVID-19. It is a common complication of COVID-19 observed in children. Usually, COVID-19 in children presents as a mild illness. However, some children contract COVID-19 and exhibit severe multisystem disturbance. In this condition, brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, digestive system, skin and blood vessels undergo severe inflammation. The presentation of this syndrome varies and depends upon the system affected. However, severe signs and symptoms include - Respiratory distress - Cyanosis - Altered mental status i.e. confusion - Severe stomach ache - Difficulty to stay awake or wake up In case of such severe signs, rush to nearest hospital. Diagnosis of MIS-C is based on presenting complain, history and positive COVID-19 test.
