A painful feeling of tense band around the head is called tension headache. It is the most commonly encountered headache. Patient complain of pain behind the eyes, around the head and neck. It is related to stress, dietary habits, activities (cold air, sitting in front of computer screen for long periods) and usually occurs once or twice a month. Other situations that can trigger a tension headache are: fatigue, alcohol, a cold, poor posture, excess caffeine, dehydration and lack of sleep. These headaches are caused by contraction of muscles in the head and neck area. There are no specific tests to diagnose it. A scan may be perform to rule out a medical cause. Management is over the counter painkillers only and modification of life style to prevent it.
