What is runner's knee and how is it managed?
Runner's knee is a term used to cover pain in knee cap/ patella which may be due to different reasons. These conditions may include: anterior knee pain syndrome, chondromalacia patella, patellofemoral mal-alignment or iliotibial band syndrome. Even though it might sound that it is caused by running but the pain can be caused by any repetitive insult like cycling, jumping, playing or walking. Risk factors for the condition include: female gender, middle age, obesity, trauma, misalignment, overuse, dislocation of joint, arthritis history, plica syndrome (inflammation of the capsule). Common symptoms include: dull aching pain around the knee, which may get severe with movement. Management includes: cold sponging 4 to 5 times a day for 15 minutes, compression bandage, elevation Ant use of anti-inflammatory medicines.
