What cognitive testing modalities might be appropriate?
There are three modalities available for cognitive testing of dementia. These include: MOCA, MMSE and CLOX test. MOCA (Montreal cognitive assessment) is a test that has 30 points, is easy and quick with an available application. It is more sensitive, can be used in blind and detailed (includes assessment of Visio spatial and word finding questions). But cannot be used in uneducated. MMSE (mini mental state exam) has 30 points, quick and easy and requires no additional equipment. It has the benefit of providing help in monitoring the progress of the disease. The back draw is that it cannot be used in people with poor education and blind. It offers limited Visio spatial cognitive ability. Hence cannot detect mild dementia. CLOX test has 16 points, the patient is given a drawing task such as draw a clock face and point out a time. It has the benefit of pointing out the severity of the disease and can point out to the type of dementia. However it is not very sensitive for diagnosis and cannot be used in blind and poorly educated..
