What are the painkillers prescribed in pleurodesis?
Pleurodesis is a procedure that involves sealing or obliteration of the pleural cavity present between the lung and chest wall by first draining the cavity and then placing the irritant in the cavity in order to obliterate it. This procedure is commonly performed in cases of malignant pleural effusion, pneumothorax and recurrent pleural effusion. The parietal pleura is a highly sensitive membrane that contains large amount of pain receptors that causes intense pain. To relieve this the patient is provided with analgesics. The commonly prescribed analgesics are NSAIDs and Opioids however the use of NSAIDs is avoided in this case as it is a double edged sword that decreases the efficacy of the procedure by reducing the inflammatory response.
