Hiatus Hernia and GERD

A hiatus hernia may result in gastroesophageal reflux disease. It may be asymptomatic or present with symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation. Hiatus hernia can cause GERD due to: 1. Loss of pressure gradient between thoracic and abdominal cavities 2. Loss of oblique angle between gastric cardia and esophagus Reference: Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine Image via: http://www.drsaurabhkalia.com/home/hiatus-hernia
