Knee joint has menisci (medial and lateral) which are c shaped cartilages on top of tibia protecting the joint from stresses. Meniscal tear is the injury in which these cartilages are torn away. This can happen by trauma that is twisting or hyper flexing specially in previously arthritic joints. Symptoms of a torn meniscus are knee pain, swelling, popping, and joint giving way. Diagnosis is made by clinical examination, a CT-scan and MRI. Condition is managed by pain relief, anti-inflammatory medication. Final treatment is surgical repair by arthroscopy. Procedure is a key hole surgery and long term benefits are only seen if the patient follows proper rehab with physiotherapy sessions.
