Hair Splinter

Hair Splinter

A stray strand of hair appears to be innocuous. However, stray hair can become trapped in the skin in rare situations, resulting in a "hair splinter." That was the situation for a 35-year-old Brazilian man who went to the ER with a puzzling ache in his right heel that worsened when he walked. Doctors couldn't find anything wrong with his foot when they first examined it. However, a closer examination of the heel revealed a single strand of hair that appeared to be linked to his foot. The individual had cutaneous pili migrans, which is a rare disorder in which a hair shaft or fragment becomes buried in the skin's surface. In the last 60 years, only about 26 cases of cutaneous pili migrans have been reported. The hair, which was barely 0.4 inches long, was removed with tweezers by doctors (10 millimeters). According to the article, which was published in The Journal of Emergency Medicine on June 20, the man got instant alleviation from the discomfort.
