What are the complications of peptic ulcer disease and H pylori infection?
An ulceration present in stomach or duodenum is known as peptic ulcer disease. It is most commonly caused by infection by a gram negative bacteria called H.pylori. It resides in stomach lining and secretes a urease halo around it which saves it from acidic pH. It is very resistant and infects patients of young age and incidence increases with age. The infection increases the risk of peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancers and MALT lymphomas. If left untreated the condition can lead to hemorrhage and pyloric stenosis as well.
