Isotope scanning of the thyroid done by either radio-labeled iodine or technetium can give a picture of activity distribution of the gland. This procedure hold more value in the presence of toxic thyroid symptoms in a patient with presence of a nodule or nodularity of the thyroid. Localisation of overactivity in the gland can help in differentiating between toxic multi-nodular goitre with areas of multiple uptake versus a single toxic nodule with suppression of the remaining gland.
