What are some pathological gait abnormalities?
An abnormal gait means an abnormal walk. This can occur due to injury, physical abnormality of limb, genetic defect or chronic illness. There are 5 types of gait abnormality. They are: Spastic, scissoring, steppage, waddling or propulsive gait. Spastic gait is the one in which patient drags his foot while walking. Scissoring gait is when legs hit each other while walking. Steppage gait is when the patient toes hit the floor vertically while walking. Waddling gait is when patient moves side to side while walking while swinging the body. Propulsive gait is when patient walks with his head pointed forward in a slouch position. Issues that cause these abnormalities include: injuries to leg, arthritis, soft tissue infections, birth defects, cerebral palsy, stroke and tendonitis.
