What is the role of Nitazoxanide in the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019)?
Nitazoxanide for COVID-19 treatment Nitazoxanide is an anti-protozoal drug used in the treatment of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium or Giardia. Some studies suggest the use of Nitazoxanide as antiviral drug. According to the study, this potential candidates for COVID-19 treatment has the tendency to deplete ATP-sensitive intracellular Ca+2 stores which leads to phophorylation of PKR (Protein Kinase R) eukaryotic translation initiation factor. This ultimately leads to downregulation of cellular translation machinery. The viral reproduction is impaired and the spread stops. Moroever, the existing literature claims Nitazoxanide has the potential to treat Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) which indicates its potential against SARS-CoV-2. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and COVID-19 Treatment Guideline Panel do not recommend Nitazoxanide for patients of COVID-19. Currently, clinical trials are being conducted to confirm the efficacy.
