Fissured Tongue

Fissured Tongue

Fissured tongue, more commonly known as cracked tongue, is a benign condition characterized by one or more shallow or deep grooves on the tongue's surface. This condition is also sometimes referred to as "scrotal tongue" or "lingua plicata". The grooves vary in depth and size and the condition is usually painless but in cases when debris, for example food bits, get stuck in the grooves then it may cause discomfort. The cause for this condition is not exactly known but it may be associated with an underlying condition such as pustular psoriasis. It has also been seen in patients with Down syndrome. The condition tends to become more prominent with increasing age. Unfortunately, there's no proper treatment for correcting the appearance of a fissured tongue. However, the patient must make sure that the tongue surface and the grooves remain clean and free of debris so as to prevent the development of an infection.
