Intestinal obstruction also called bowel obstruction is defined as the blockage of the intestinal contents due to any reason that prevents the contents of intestine to pass through the body. Intestinal obstruction is a broad term that involves many different conditions. Some of the commonly occurring conditions that cause intestinal obstruction includes: Herniation: Protrusion of abdominal contents through an opening. Adhesions: It is an acquired condition commonly seen after surgical procedures and involves formation of fibrous bands between the tissues and organs. These are the scar like tissues that sticks the tissues and organs together. Volvulus: It is the twisting or turning of intestine around itself or the mesentery leading to obstruction.
