What is a Pancoast’s tumour?
In 1924 and 1932 an American radiologist Henry Pancoast described a rare neoplasm of lungs. Hence this neoplasm is called Pancoast tumor. Pancoast tumor is a very rare and very aggressive neoplasm which is pulmonary in origin. This tumor is produced in the superior sulcus i.e. the apical pleuropulmonary groove. These tumors metastasize and involve vertebrae, stellate ganglion, lower trunks of brachial plexus, adjacent ribs and intercostals nerves. The prognosis of Pancoast tumor is quite poor and it is associated with high mortality rates. Today, with advancement in medical science the treatment strategies for Pancoast tumor have improved. 2 year survival rate is up to 55-70%.
