Colles vs Smith Fracture

Colles vs Smith Fracture

Colles and Smith fractures describe fractures of the distal radius that are extra-articular in nature. Colles fracture is considered the most common type of wrist fracture and usually occurs in an osteoporotic bone. This fracture occurs in the event of person falling forwards and planting the outstretched hand in front which causes dorsal displacement of distal portion of the radius. Smith fracture usually occurs due to backwards fall on a hand thats bent forward or sometimes outstretched. The distal broken end of the radius is displaced ventrally.
