Myxedema coma is a rare condition that presents with a depressed state of consciousness, respiratory depression, and profound hypothermia. It may develop after years of severe untreated hypothyroidism. Precipitating factors include infection, trauma, cold exposure, and narcotics. It is a medical emergency, with a high mortality rate of 50%-70%, even with treatment.. Intravenous thyroxine and hydrocortisone are given to the patients while carefully monitoring the hemodynamic state. Supportive treatment is also given to maintain blood pressure and respiration.
