Ultrasonography of the pericardial sac- Tamponade

Ultrasonography of the pericardial sac- Tamponade

Cardiac Tamponade is a condition when fluid accumulated within the pericardium prevents normal filling of the heart. This is a medical emergency and needs urgent diagnosis and intervention. On ultrasonography, the black anechoic fluid around the heart represents free fluid filling up in the sac. Note the right heart collapse characteristic of tamponade. This occurs because elevated pressure within the sac prevents venous emptying into the atria.
