Skin flap reconstruction

Skin flap reconstruction

Skin flap reconstruction following melanoma excision. Deconstruction before Reconstruction- Scalp defects are difficult to close because the skin is stiff and doesn’t move easily. Sometimes small defects require taking the entire scalp apart to get them closed. Skin grafts can be used but leave a hairless patch. Closing primarily allows the hair to regrow and cover all the scars. This case is a melanoma resulting in a 6x8cm defect with exposed pericranium (membrane covering the bone). 3 flaps were elevated, the galea (tough layer that limits skin stretching) was scored to allow expansion of the skin and rotated to close like the aperture on a camera.
