A hernia is the protrusion of any of the abdominal contents through any of its walls. This is called an external hernia. When the intestines or omentum protrude into the restricted zone of the abdominal cavity itself it is called an internal hernia. Inguinal hernia is a type of external hernia. It is the protrusion of a loop of intestines through the inguinal wall or inguinal canal. When the protrusion occurs through deep inguinal ring it is called indirect or oblique inguinal hernia. However, when the protrusion occurs through the weak posterior wall of inguinal canal or Triangle of Hesselbach it is called direct inguinal hernia. Congenital umbilical hernia the non-return of mid-gut loop into the abdominal cavity. Acquired umbilical hernia occurs due to weakness of umbilical scar. A part of mid-gut protrudes outside. However, it disappears when an infant grows. Incisional hernia occurs through the anterolateral wall when some incisions are made for surgery. Hiatal hernia occurs when stomach protrudes into the diaphragm into the chest cavity.
