Major depressive disorder is a type of affective disorder and it's diagnosed when the patient has depressed mood PLUS 5 or more of the signs and symptoms present for at least 2 weeks. The signs and symptoms can easily be remembered using the mnemonic SIG-E-CAPS. "S"leep - Insomnia or hypersomnia "I"nterest - Loss of interest in pleasurable activities (anhedonia) "G"uilt - Feeling of worthlessness "E"nergy - Lack of energy "C"oncentration - Loss of concentration "A"ppetite - Increased or decreased "P"sychomotor - Agitation (anxiety) or retardation (lethargy) "S"uicide - Suicidal ideation
