Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is procedure that is usually performed on lumps and swellings beneath the skin that are found after during a physical exam or after imaging studies. FNA is done by inserting a thin needle attached to a syringe into the area of interest and the contents of the swelling/lump are aspirated and sent for histopathology report. This procedure is usually performed on areas like breast, thyroid gland and lymph nodes in the neck, groin, or armpit to rule out any serious medical conditions (such as malignancy).
