Alcohol withdrawal syndrome is the syndrome that occurs when a person with chronic alcohol intake stops or reduces that intake suddenly. This syndrome occurs because the persons body is accustomed to high alcohol levels that have a depressant effect which have adjusted the brain to release more than normal amounts of stimulatory compounds for normal body functioning. Sudden stoppage leads to overstimulation becoming predominant and resulting in withdrawal symptoms. The symptoms range from minor (tremor, anxiety, nausea, vomiting, and insomnia) symptoms to major (hallucinations and seizures) to delirium tremens. The treatment include supportive care and some pharmacological drugs such as sedative/ hypnotics (certain benzodiazepines) which can be prescribed according to physicians discretion.
