Acute compartment syndrome is a condition that occurs when there is increase in pressure inside a closed muscle compartment that becomes greater than the perfusion pressure of that compartment which ultimately results in ischemia of the musculature and nerves. This condition usually results after trauma resulting in muscle injury or fracture that causes acute swelling within the compartment and hence the increased compartment pressure. The patient usually complains of burning deep pain and and decreased peripheral sensation secondary to nerve irritation along with signs of apparent swelling and erythema.
