Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky mountain spotted fever is a disease that is transmitted by the bite of a tick that has been infected with the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsi. Then the bacteria spreads through the infected person's lymphatic system. The symptoms include high fever which persists for 2 to 3 weeks, chills, headache, poor appetite and a rash with small red spots. The rash initially mimics that of measles but then transforms into the typical maculopapular eruption. It is usually on the wrists, ankles and forearms but then it spreads to involve the back, limbs and chest too. Rocky mountain spotted fever can cause serious damage to internal organs and even death if not treated. Hence, treatment should start immediately after diagnosis is made.
