MRCP is a type of magnetic resonance imaging that is non-invasive in nature and is used to visualise the intra and extrahepatic biliary tree and the ductal system of pancreas. This technique uses the fluid which is present in the biliary and pancreatic ducts as an intrinsic contrast medium resulting in acquisition of images using sequences that are heavily T2 weighted. MRCP is indicated in several conditions of the pancreaticobiliary ductal system and is usually preferred over ERCP when invasiveness is to be avoided.
