Tonsillectomy Complications Tonsillectomy is a simple surgical procedure where tonsils are removed. Following complications can arise: 1. Haemorrhage: Bleeding after operation. It is classified into 3 types: Primary haemorrhage: Haemorrhage during operation Reactionary haemorrhage: Within 24 hours in recovery. Common causes are ligature slippage, rise in BP and violent efforts Secondary haemorrhage: Commonly seen on 5th post-operative day. Usually a result of bacterial infection. 2. Injury to the cavity 3. Blood aspiration 4. Anaesthetic complications 5. Injury to palate 6. Referred earache 7. Tonsillar remnants
