Keratoacanthoma

Keratoacanthoma

It is a benign tumor of the skin which resembles a crater and is thought to have taken origin from the pilosebaceous gland. The tumor grows rapidly over weeks to months and then undergoes subsequent spontaneous resolution. The classic appearance is a dome-shaped nodule with a central keratin plug. People who are fair skinned or have chronic sun exposure are at increased risk of developing a keratoacanthoma. Even though the lesion resolves on its own, there are treatment options available to remove it at an early stage if the patient wills or in order to avoid cosmetic discomfort.

Keratoacanthomas often appear clinically benign, but often when removed they show microscopic malignancy. They should be biopsied to rule out squamous cell skin carcinoma.
