Bier block or intravenous regional anaesthesia (IVRA) is a local anaesthesia technique by which a intravenously injected local anaesthetic agent is isolated from the circulation in a target area. This block is achieved by exsanguination of the region of interest along with application of tourniquets to safely stop the blood flow. After that the anaesthetic agent is introduced into the venous system of the limb which diffuse into the surrounding tissue while tourniquets retain the agent within the targeted area. This technique is usually used for some brief surgical procedures or manipulations of the upper or lower extremity. This technique has found greatest acceptance for the upper extremities as lower extremity can have safety issues with it.
