Atlanto-axial joint

Atlanto-axial joint

Atlanto-axial joint is a joint formed between the first two cervical vertebrae named atlas (C1) and axis (C2). It is a pivot type of joint which allows the rotation of head with some degree of flexion and extension. Because of the close relation to brain stem, fracture or injury at this joint can be life threatening.
