Extreme Sexual Behavior, Hypermetamorphosis, and Memory Loss: Klüver-Bucy Syndrome

Klüver-Bucy Syndrome is a cluster of signs and symptoms attributed to damage to temporal lobes. It is a rare cerebral neurophysiological disorder. The damage to temporal lobes results in idiosyncratic behaviors. The damage to temporal lobes may occur secondary to trauma, infections, tumors, or degenerative changes in the brain. It may also occur as a complication of herpes simplex encephalitis. Signs and symptoms of Klüver-Bucy Syndrome are: - Excessive urge to explore things i.e., hypermetamorphosis - Urge to put random things in mouth - Memory loss - Extreme sexual behavior - Difficulty identifying and interpreting visual information i.e., visual agnosia - Emotional irritability - Increased appetite - Loss of reason There is no definitive treatment of Klüver-Bucy Syndrome. The management is usually supportive. Psychotropics may be associated with alleviation of few signs and symptoms of Klüver-Bucy Syndrome.
