Double Contrast Barium Enema Technique

Double Contrast Barium Enema Technique

Double contrast barium enema (DCBE) technique is a fluoroscopy procedure for the imaging of colon. It is called double contrast because the imaging is done with the help of two contrasts, one positive contrast (e.g. barium sulfate contrast) and one negative contrast of gas (preferably CO2). This imaging procedure is indicated and takes preference over single contrast technique in cases where better visualisation of the mucosa is required. In the past this technique had been used for colon cancer screening too.
