7. NOBEL PRIZE SESSION The YES Meeting proudly announces that Professor Ada E. Yonath, 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will honour us with her presence at the 12th YES Meeting! She was recognized by the Nobel committee for her studies of both the structure and the function of the ribosome, including all the mechanisms underlying protein biosynthesis, in a research line she pioneered over twenty years ago. Additionally, Professor Yonath shed light on the action of over twenty different antibiotics targeting the ribosome, uncovering the mechanisms of drug resistance and synergism, as well as the structural basis for antibiotic selectivity. Her discoveries revolutionized the field of structural biology and still play a key role in the development of new antibiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives.
