The causes of dullness to percussion on respiratory examination are - Pleural thickening, as in chronic pleumonia, tuberculosis, empyema, hemothorax - Pleural scarring, as in asbestosis - Pleural fluid effusion, as in pulmonary embolism, congestive heart failure, pneumonia - Consolidation, as in lung cancer and pneumonia - Raised hemi-diaphragm, as in stomach distention, subphrenic abscess, splenomegaly, abdominal tumors - Lobectomy i.e. surgical removal of a lobe of lung
