Symptoms include discomfort in the eye along with watering and thick discharge. Signs include conjunctival congestion, enlarged lymph nodes. The follicles of the conjunctiva may also be enlarged. Viral infections usually settle on their own and only supportive treatment is warranted. They include cold compression of the eye, maintaining good hygiene, dilute steroids to decrease inflammation. Bacterial infections also need topical antibiotics.
