Amitriptyline oral belongs to Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA). It is used for the treatment of moderate to severe depression, panic disorders, migraine, severe headaches, chronic pain syndrome i.e. neuropathic pain, eating disorders, and post-herpetic neuralgia. The side effects of Amitriptyline include weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, blurred vision, tachycardia, arrhythmias, nausea, weakness, nightmares, changes in libido, weight fluctuations, changes in appetite, muscle spasms, hallucinations and drowsiness. Amitriptyline interacts with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and causes hypertension, hyperpyrexia, convulsions and coma. Amitriptyline interacts with ethanol and other CNS depressants and causes toxic sedation. It also interacts with direct and indirect acting adrenergic drugs.
