Gastroschisis

Gastroschisis

This picture shows a rare birth defect known as gastroschisis! It's a congenital defect of the anterior abdominal wall in which the baby's intestines and content freely protrudes out of the abdominal cavity due to failure of the abdominal wall to develop probably after the disruption of the blood supply to the wall. The small and large bowel, stomach, and often the fallopian tube/ovary/testis herniate through the defect.

Is this fatal or can it be treated by re-inserting the organs into the right place?

It can be treated via surgery to reinsert the organs back into the body.
