Noma is an infectious but non-contagious bacterial disease that is often neglected. It mostly affects malnourished children with underlying systemic diseases in low-income settings such as in Africa and Asia. Previously it used to occur widely in Europe but disappeared as healthcare services improved. It is easily treatable and preventable but due to the lack of knowledge, up to 90% of the people affected die in the first two weeks if not treated with antibiotics on time. It starts as gingivitis and an ulcer appears which progresses to a swelling. The disease perforates the skin and a gangrene covers the affected area rapidly destroying the cheeks, gums, nose or eyes. Patients who do survive noma have only one choice for the need of a better life that is a reconstructive surgery. Source: https://www.news-medical.net/health/What-is-Noma-(Cancrum-Oris).aspx
