Diabetic Adults Need Their Sugar!

Hypoglycemia is the unexceptional side effect of insulin therapy and/or use of secretagogues. During the episode of hypoglycemia, adult population is not only dependent on others for assistance, but they are susceptible to increase risk of future complications. The complications of repeated hypoglycemic episodes are numerous. According to the latest research, repeated hypoglycemic episodes are correlated with impaired cognition in geriatric population. In addition, there is a high risk of major macrovascular event that may result in death. Hypoglycemic episode in adult patients should be treated promptly according to the devised guidelines. The patients should be encouraged to take in simple carbohydrates for instant release of glucose,. Parenteral glucose may also be administered in severe cases. Intensification of glycemic control is one of the major causes of hypoglycemia in diabetic adults. Imparting knowledge regarding principles of management of diabetes and awareness of risk factors associated with a severe hypoglycemic episode in diabetic population may help prevent such morbidities.
