what's difference between epidural and subdural hematoma?
Extra dural hematoma can be caused be fracture of skull bone followed by ruptured meningeal artery.. duramater gets separated from bone. Sub dural hematoma is caused by ruptured cerebral vein where it enters dural venous sinus, venous blood accumulats between periosteal and meningeal layers of duramater and they get separated
In epidural hematoma there is lucid intervals are seen and subdural hematoma cause Tunder headache
Epidural bleeding occurs between the skull and dura; whereas subdural bleeding occurs between the dura and arachnoid
In Epidural hematoma, skull fracture from blunt trauma causes laceration of arterial vessels, most commonly the middle meningeal artery. In Subdural hematoma, head trauma causes rupture of the bridging veins.
Brain has the outer most mening Dura matter. If the hematoma lies in bt skull and dura matter it is Epidural (since above the Dura matter) and if the bleeding under the Dura Matter it is Subdural (since below the Dura matter)
