The question that is most commonly asked when it comes to these kinds of deaths is; Were the victims alive during the burning process? There are different stages that the body goes through while burning. In some cases the larynx and trachea or the trachea alone gets dissected (right picture). If soot can be found, then it means that the person was still breathing during the fire. It is a result of smoke inhalation or just burns that lead to the death of the individual. If soot can not be found, then this person was most likely dead before the fire.
