We learn in different ways. The way I found most useful, was to extract a “core” of the most important things to know, and learn them well. When having this basic knowledge, I thought out how the rest was. This I did with all subjects. In hematology I would start with learning all the blood cells (they are not many), learn how they look with different dyes, including in different stages of maturing. And of course throughoutly how they work. When you have learned this, the rest will nearly come “by itself”. Just turn the information back and forth in your mind, and the information you already have will tell you how it functions. One small special tip: The peripheral blood smear of Mononucleosis and Acute Lymphatic Leukemia looks very similar, with many immature lymphocytes in the peripheral blood. The way to see which of those it is, is by the saying: “Gay variety versus deadly monotony”. This saying means: In mononucleosis, the immature lymphocytes are in different stages of maturity. This is the gay= happy variety. In acute lymphatic leukemia, all the immature lymphocytes are alike, being at the same stage of maturity. This is the deadly monotony.
