This abnormal lateral curvature of the spine is a condition called Scoliosis. In scoliosis, the patient’s spine is curved from side to side or front to back, and may also be rotated. On an x-ray, the spine of an individual with a typical scoliosis may look more like an "S" or a "C" than a straight line. It is quite common in young individuals and is often idiopathic and asymptomatic. In some cases, however, it is the result of underlying structural or neurological abnormalities. The majority of cases are idiopathic, meaning there’s no apparent underlying cause. Other reasons for scoliosis are broad, including congenital (from birth), neuromuscular scoliosis seen in spina bifida and patients with cerebral palsy, degenerative scoliosis due to a trauma, major previous back surgery, or osteoporosis. Surgical correction is done in curvatures of over 45 degrees and typically involves the use of modern instrumentation systems in which hooks and screws are applied to the spine to anchor long rods, ensuring the correction of the curvature and its stability over time.
