Both are extravasation of blood but purpura is intradermal, not elevated and few millimeters in diameter. Bruising is subcutaneous, elevated, larger.
Purpura, also called blood spots or skin hemorrhages, refers to purple-colored spots that are most recognizable on the skin. The spots may also appear on organs or mucous membranes, including the membranes on the inside of the mouth. Also Purpura refers to dark purple spots or patches with a diameter between 4 and 10 millimeters. Purpura occurs when small blood vessels burst, causing blood to pool under the skin. Purpura might look like bruises, but they are not caused by an injury as most regular bruises are. I often mistaken them with ecchymosis. I knew that purpura tends have a more defined border than ecchymosis does and sometimes looks more like a rash than a bruise. Unlike ecchymosis, purpura isn't caused by force from an injury. But I dont know how to differentiate briuses from ecchymosis? Are they the same? Cause I read this once: A bruise, also known as ecchymosis or a contusion, occurs when small blood vessels (capillaries) under the skin bleed, while the overlying skin remains intact. The injury causes blood to leak and collect near the skin surface, causing bluish-black skin discolouration. Please write me about that. Thanks
Bruises are typically caused by an injury, such as a fall or a knock, while ecchymosis is not always a result of trauma. Diseases and other conditions can also cause ecchymosis. Thank you 😊
