Weight loss by resecting the stomach! ⁣

This is a Gastric sleeve surgery. ⁣ Sleeve gastrectomy is a bariatric (weight loss) surgical procedure involving resection of the greater curvature of the fundus and body of the stomach to leave approximately 15% of the original gastric volume (60-100 mL), and a tubular stomach is created, thus creating restrictive physiology.⁣ The postsurgical gastric pouch resembles a banana-shape, which is restricted in size and volume.⁣ ⁣ Shown here is the portion of the stomach that was removed during a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.⁣ The partial gastrectomy is oriented vertically, parallel to the lesser curvature of the stomach, which results in a gastric volume reduction of 70 to 80%, leaving a narrow gastric tube or sleeve.⁣ No intestines are removed or bypassed during the sleeve gastrectomy.⁣ The main mechanism of action is that it promotes weight loss through two principal mechanisms of action, mechanical (creation of restriction) and endocrine (creation of anorexia).⁣ The newly created stomach is considerably smaller and facilitates significantly smaller meals, which translates into less calories consumed.⁣ Sleeve gastrectomy removes the gastric fundus and, therefore, significantly decreases the postprandial levels of ghrelin, a hormone referred to as the “hunger hormone” which promotes satiety, suppress hunger. ⁣ Decreasing the levels of ghrelin promotes weight loss by inducing satiety.⁣ Like any surgical operation, sleeve gastrectomy has possible complications, such as leakage, dilation or stricture of the sleeve , gastric dilatation, and gastroesophageal reflux.⁣ Photo credit : @cirurgiabariatrica_bh

I am an RN that has battled obesity my entire life. I had this surgery in 2015 at the age of 63. It was life changing. I had tried everything and this was was a decision that came after nothing else worked. I lost 70 pounds and have kept it off. What is not said in this commentary is it is a tool, not a total solution. I still have to exercise and I still have to watch what I eat. It is also a prevention against Type 2 diabetes. Something to do with the removal of the mass of tissue alters the hormones and those individuals who have had the surgery do not develop Type 2. I caution you as health care providers, esp. if you have never been obese, do not judge individuals who seek this as one part of their strategy. You do not get here as a first option....it is a last resort. I continued in therapy to work on why I over ate. It was because I was anxious....this operation allowed me to stop my compulsive over eating. It was a blessing!
