Reason behind Onions & Tears

Reason behind Onions & Tears

Onion have cells which releases a compound called sulfenic acid. This acid get mix with the enzymes of onion and releases another gas called propanethiol S-oxide. While chopping onions the gas gets into the air and comes in contact with our eyes. This gas get mixed with the water present in your eyes and produce sulphuric acid. The lacrimal glands now become irritated and produces the tears!! HOW CAN YOU STOP TEARS 1. Dip the onion in water for 5-10 minutes before you start cutting it. 2. Use a sharp knife to cut the onion—you'll release less of the enzymes into the air. 3. Cut onions in cold water. 4. Cut the root last—it has a higher concentration of enzymes. 5. Chill or freeze onions to minimize the amount of gas released into the air. 6. Wear kitchen goggles to protect your eyes.
