Can you please help with points for this topic: Should an alcoholic be allowed a second liver transplant?
IMHO no unless its a living donor transplant from family or friend donor livers are too precious to be squandered on a recipient who won't comply with acceptance criteria. Its insult to the donor and their family.
Alcoholism is a disease for life. As there are many recovered alcoholics, why not make them eligible after a period of sobriety. In the European countries I am familiar with, you are eligible if you have terminal irreversible damage and have been sober for 6 months. Remember that it is estimated that by 2020 the indication for liver transplantation due to alcoholism will be superseded by liver failure due to obesity. Everyone deserves a second chance!
