I'm 29 years old and have recently made the bold decision to transition from the nonprofit arts world to nursing. I have 2 BAs and 1 MA, not having anything to do with nursing. I'm done with prerequisites by the end of the spring and would love ideas on how to use more of my time to boost my application. Thoughts on training for CNA, EMT, phlebotomy, patient care tech, anything at all? I have no clinical experience but am looking to volunteer or anything really.

Look for a second degree program and get focused. You must build a convincing case for β€œwhy nursing?” Shadow some nurses...you sound like you have jumped around a bit. We want to know that you know what the rigor of the profession entails...go work as a CNA. That will give you a great picture of the RN role.

I would recommend being a CNA for experience. You can work part time while in nursing school and if you like where you work, stay on as an RN after you pass the nclex.

Thanks so much for this BLS and ACLS suggestion! I started looking for courses in the area and so excited to sign up!

I set on admissions at the #1 ranked nursing school. It is key that your response to the essay questions reflect our core values and our commitment to the social determinants of heath. Being a volunteer and a CNA helps but only because it shows your determination. Write good responses and have them edited. We grade your ability to write, too. We get you up to speed on BLS after you enter...have grades well over 3.0 and demonstrate your commitment in your essay. Give examples and be sincere. Read about EI first.

I highly recommend being a CNA or medical scribe! I am a current CNA and I have learned SO much about nursing. I, too, am also going into a nursing program this fall and a lot of my nursing friends already think I have a leg up on them from being a CNA a...which I think as well haha you are learning so much about bedside manner that many β€œnew” nurses would be new too! Where I work, many of the nurses were previously CNAs and you can definitely tell because they know what to do in a lot of situations that others would not!
